BP's main rivals believe safety shortfalls are behind the Gulf oil disaster, saying Gulf of Mexico oil spill could have been prevented had the London-based company followed industry-wide safety procedures.
In a testimony before the Energy and Commerce Committee of the US House of Representatives on Tuesday, global oil titans Chevron, ExxonMobil, ConocoPhillips, and Shell criticized BP's actions.
"I believe the independent investigation will show that this tragedy was preventable," said Chevron chief executive officer John Watson, AFP reported.
"The Deepwater Horizon accident tragically reinforces that all companies must operate with the same high standards of safety and reliability. It is clear that failure to do so has dire consequences," he said.
